All devices attached to the CERN network should be registered,
using a suitable device name. This applies also to portable computers
to be used on "portable" outlets. The registration form http://network.cern.ch/register
is also used to check and update information, as well as requesting
moves, change of service type and temporary/permanent removal.
| A very important
part of the information for a device is the ethernet address
which it will use. This information is a fixed part of the device
(more precisely, the interface of the device to the network).
Frequently, a new device registration is made before this information
is known. We therefore ask users to supply it as soon as possible.
The method to find this information varies according to the
device and software being used. |
|
The ethernet address is 12
hexadecimal (0-9, A-F) digits, of which the first six specify
the maker of the interface and the last six are unique. On some
systems this address is already printed on a label, either outside
the system or inside on the interface card which has the network
connector. |
